1. Wi-Fi surprise
My female friend invited me and the guy I was seeing to a party to celebrate her new apartment.
Once we went there, he put his phone on the table to light up a cigarette. Shortly after he received a random notification, which caught my attention. I noticed that his phone was automatically connected to the Wi-Fi.
It was quite strange since we just got there, he never asked for a Wi-Fi password and my friend actually just moved into this apartment.
Seemed like he had a private tour before the other guests arrived.
When I asked him about it, he looked stunned and shocked.
2. Billing error
One afternoon my friend called me in a panic, saying her phone bill was sky-high and could I help her take a look at her bill online. When her account opened, I saw over 500 text messages to and from my husband’s phone number.
I asked her why she and my husband were texting back and forth so much. She audibly gasped when I told her I could see the dates and times they texted each other.
She tried to play it off and say that they passed jokes between each other and crap like that.
For six months this was going on.
I confronted him; he confessed.
3. The scarlet letter
I had been married for close to 10 years. One day I came home from work earlier then my now-ex.
I got the mail and noticed a certified letter from a courthouse. It was addressed to my husband. Since I did all the mail stuff, I opened it.
It was a court order for child support. A lady was suing my husband for child support for their two-year-old son.
I called him at work and asked about the child and he said we will talk about it when he got home. He did not come home for three days.
Apparently, my husband had promised this woman that he was going to leave me for her, and when he didn’t keep his word, she took him to court.
When he said he was working late, he was with her. He told me we had to take a pay cut, but that was a lie. It was for him to be able to support his other child without me knowing.
4. It wasn’t credit card fraud
I was with someone for four years and I was planning our wedding, which was six months away at the time.
Then I noticed hotel charges on my card on an online reservation site, plus a hotel. Figured if it was him that the card company arguing with me on the phone about it would get him to confess. He denied the whole thing and played dumb.
Flash forward one month. We are sitting in our office on our computers and I get a call from the card company again. They had proof. The imbecile did use my card and he signed his full name on the receipt!
After an hour of arguing with him, I said, “I know that hotels sometimes have video cameras. If I am going to fight the card company and claim fraud/theft, I am contacting that hotel to get video footage of who checked in on my card. So last chance: Do you have something you need to tell me?”
He finally confessed that he had been doing this for two years. That was half the relationship.
5. Hello nurse
My then-boyfriend and I were long distance. He was not into social media, so I maintained his Facebook account by replying to messages. He forgot I had his password.
I logged into his account, opened Messenger to check new messages and saw an active chat. Curiosity got the best of me, and I started reading.
He was chatting with a nurse from his new college. It was innocent, and I was actually happy to see he's making friends in the new place, but very soon it turned into him asking her if she's single. She was single, and he said he was too — right when I, his girlfriend of four years, was reading!
He told her she's the most beautiful girl he's ever seen, how he has never felt that love for anyone, how he thinks she's the one for him. Did I mention he complimented her breasts? All in one chat.
I called him right away. He cut my call, messaged me that he's in the hospital. I told him to say hi to the nurse. He called back immediately, followed by days of denial, then acceptance, then begging.
6. Record of wrongs
We’d been married nearly a year when she asked me to take in her sister-in- law’s brother for a few days while he was in town.
I didn’t give the guy much thought afterward. Until a couple of weeks later.
We had one of those answering machines with a tiny tape inside. I came home from work one afternoon while my wife was out. The machine was blinking, so I checked for messages. Nothing could have ever prepared me for what I heard.
The recording was of a complete conversation that had taken place early that morning, after I’d left for work.
It seemed apparent she had been sleeping when he called and the phone must have rung enough times for the machine to pick up before she answered. Unless you stop the machine it keeps recording, and that’s what it did. For an entire 20 minutes or so, my wife managed to shake off her drowsiness and candidly describe, in vivid detail, the last time he had woken her up.
Then followed some very sultry flirting with moaning sounds included for effect, talk of possible plans to meet up soon and how to explain them away to me. And the recollection of other intimate moments they had shared in our home. Very little was left unsaid.
7. Buffet saves the day
There was this Chinese buffet in my hometown that I used to eat at quite regularly. The woman at the front desk would seat me herself and bring me my drink.
I used to go there all the time with my then-girlfriend.
One day, I went in there alone on my lunch break. The woman at the front desk approached me at my table.
She asked if my girlfriend and I had broken up. I was confused. Then she said, very matter-of-factly, that she came in here earlier with another man and had kissed him.
I was shocked. So I texted her, asking if she wanted to join me at the buffet. She told me she already ate and I asked where she went. She told me she went to her moms.
I told her the waitress saw her here earlier. She texted back saying she was there but didn’t eat anything.
At that point, I lost interest in pursuing the truth. I left the woman at the desk a $20 tip.
8. Under the mattress
I didn't find out that my ex-girlfriend was cheating on me until after we split up.
She would call me in the morning when I was at work to tell me she wasn't going to work that day, when in reality she was just checking up to see if I was at work and wouldn't be home within the next few hours.
One day we got into an argument, and the next thing I know, she's getting all dolled-up and going out. She would always talk about Larry from work and the jokes he would tell.
When she took off that night, she never came back home. Turned out she ran to Larry and they both had quit their jobs and left town together.
It wasn't until a few months later, when I moved out of our apartment and took the bed apart, I found opened condom wrappers in between the mattress and box spring.
I realized all those times she called in sick to work she was really having sex with Larry.
9. Dinner date
I was just starting a relationship with this guy, John. We had keys to each other's houses.
One day, this nagging feeling just went full force. I was too restless to even focus at work, so I took half the day off. I bought some groceries and went to John's house to make dinner for him when he came home after work.
The lights were out and the door locked, as expected. I went straight to the kitchen and put my stuff down when I heard a noise in the bedroom.
I slowly opened the door to see John and Brittany on the bed, going at it.
So I went back to the kitchen, took a chair, went back to the bedroom, placed the chair by the open door, sat down and calmly watched them.
They were so into it that they didn't even notice me watching them. When they finished, John made a move to go to the bathroom.
He looked like an electrocuted cat and screamed like a lady. Brittany sat up in bed and saw me. She rolled to the side of the bed and tried to hide under it.
10. Bathroom break
I had graduated college already, and my fiancée, Jen, was in her last year. The weekend of her graduation, I drove to the college to stay in Jen's apartment.
One of my friends, Bill, came up to us and told me he had a brand-new Stingray from his parents as a graduation gift. I told Jen I would run out to see it and be back soon.
I realized I really needed to pee, so I darted to the bathroom in Jen's apartment, which was attached to her room.
I heard Jen enter the apartment, then I heard a guy's voice. He shut the door behind him and I could see them in the bathroom mirror.
She explained to him that I'd gone downstairs and could be gone for a while, so they stripped and got after it. I was frozen.
Then I noticed her camera. It's a digital camera and can take movies, so I turned on the movie mode and started it.
I left a note saying, "Made a movie of you and lover-boy; hope you like it.”
11. Lost in translation
I was in a long-distance relationship, countries apart. I worked my butt off to save money to go and visit him for three months. I had to quit my job.
I went to his country and stayed at his house. The first weeks were awesome. We were even thinking about getting married.
I stayed alone all morning at his house because he had to go to work. I was trying to apply for a master’s program in his country, so I had to write a motivation letter in French and needed to use Google translate.
He had left for work and lent me his computer to write the motivation letter. I needed to translate a sentence, so I went to the navigation bar and started writing “trans….” and then a bunch of websites appeared.
He had been visiting trans dating sites. We were a hetero couple.
12. Stalker strategy
The woman who was having an affair with my husband started stalking me.
I started seeing the same woman at the supermarket, outside our apartment, in the same carriage on the train, even at events like the New York Marathon.
I pointed her out to my husband once, and his reaction was extraordinary. He got very agitated, turned bright red and he started walking rapidly in the opposite direction. If he hadn’t reacted so badly, I would not have become suspicious.
It transpired that he had broken off his affair with her and she was pressuring him to continue the relationship. Her stalking me was her way of pressuring him.
13. Just the ticket
We were moving house. We were engaged. I found a movie ticket while unpacking the boxes in the new home.
I looked back through our conversations during that day. He had told me that he had to meet with a new manager from his work to discuss a new contract that afternoon/early evening. Looking back at the messages, I can see he wasn't responsive to messages from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The movie was at 6:30 p.m.
I waited until he got home, and he knew instantly that something was wrong. I showed him the ticket and said, "I don't remember seeing this movie with you, was it good?"
The look on his face was all I needed.
He hissed at me, "Are you really going to go there with me? Are you really going to accuse me of that?"
I knew what his reaction meant. I knew that he was unfaithful to his previous partner. He had many affairs. Lied continuously.
14. Mr. Wonderful
When I was a teenager, I found out that my mom’s boyfriend of a few years was cheating on her.
I was waiting for class to start when one of my good friends sat down behind me. My friend told me that life was pretty good at her house. Her mother had a new boyfriend, who was so great she called him “Mr. Wonderful.”
He lived in an upscale neighborhood. All her mom said was that it was a sprawling ranch with a swimming pool and a huge bay window in front with a baby grand piano sitting in it. And no one even played it.
My smile faded. I said, “My mom’s boyfriend lives in a sprawling ranch with a swimming pool and a baby grand that’s been in his family for generations that he doesn’t know how to play but sits in his big bay window.”
15. Double trouble
So I have a friend. We can call her Yemi, and she had a sister named Kemi.
Yemi and Kemi came back from a holiday. I wanted them to meet the special guy in my life. They had been my friends for over 15 years.
We met up at the mall. I don't know when, but they all exchanged numbers.
Skip ahead two months later. I go to my boyfriend’s house to make him a surprise lunch.
His gate man didn't want me to enter the house. It was weird, because I could see his car there. I forced my way through because I felt something was off — and then I saw Yemi and Kemi there.
I go insane for a moment with anger, envy and hatred. We exchange heated words and we almost break into a cat fight. I was about to return the slap Kemi gave me when someone grabbed my hand.
Guess what? I found out they are both pregnant by my boyfriend. He tells me not to hit a pregnant woman.
I leave the food there and I take my leave.
16. A dance with destiny
My roommate and best friend was an exotic dancer who had never wanted to attend college, but we planned to be roommates while I was in school and she did her dancing.
She hadn't met my boyfriend Matt yet, and each time he came over, she was never home.
One night after an all-weekend study session, a few friends and I decided to go see my best friend at the dance club. She was on stage when we got there.
Then I saw Matt walk in. He was supposed to be at home for the weekend.
He hadn't seen us yet, as he only had eyes on my best friend. After her set was over, she was off the stage and in my boyfriend's arms!
As they wove their way to the table, I stepped back and out of his eyesight until they came face-to-face with the group. She started introducing him to me.
I can't say it went well. Once I told her I knew him, and that it was such a coincidence he happened to be my boyfriend too, he couldn't get out of there fast enough.
17. Wrong recipient
He was in a group email back and forth all day with some coworkers. The conversation turned to sex. We were all in our 20s, working in a dating hotline customer-service call centre. It was a common topic.
I had been emailing with him — this was before texting — and had asked something mundane. He replied with, “I don’t really have a strong sex drive, but these last couple weeks with _____, totally unlike me!”
My stomach dropped. One moment life was fine, the next it was not. I just asked what he was talking about and didn’t hear back for 20 minutes. He gave some stupid story that came out in bits and pieces over the next few days as I grilled him on the details.
We’d been together three years and living together. He’d been secretly dating her for about a month. And many of our coworkers knew. It was brutal.
